Church history

More than 110 years ago, men from the little Southern California town of Moneta bought lumber from the shipwreck of a lumber schooner for $1.00 a wagonload and with it built a tiny (18’x24’) church. Occasional church services were conducted there by nearby ministers and there was a Sunday school at the Moneta Elementary School. On April 11, 1899, the Moneta Presbyterian Church was organized with 17 charter members. In 1903, Reverend L.W. Houston was installed as the first resident pastor.

In 1922, a new church was built on the corner of Gardena Boulevard and Manhattan Place. The building still stands and is now occupied by the Church of Christ. At the time of the dedication, the congregation numbers 300. For 38 years, the church served God at this location under the guidance of these ministers: Rev. M. L. Leitch, Rev. Chester M. Buley, Rev. David Barnett, Jr., Rev. S. Martin Eidsath, and Rev. Truman Jolley.

In 1955, land was purchased on Redondo Beach Boulevard. The first unit of the new plant, consisting of a fellowship hall, kitchen and fireside room was built and the first service was held on October 5, 1958, World-Wide Communion Sunday. Rev. R. Murray Jones became pastor in 1958 and under his leadership; the new church was built, almost entirely by the volunteer labor of the men of the church. The new sanctuary was completed in 1964. In 1968, Rev. Murray Jones retired.

In 1969, the Rev. Arthur E. French was installed. Rev. French served until his retirement in 1999. Afterwards we have been served by installed, interim and Pulpit Supply Leadership. Thus, a variety of styles and voices have led us in worship and service. The families raised their families in an environment filled with worship and praise of God, with Sunday School and related activities, Presbyterian Women, Mariners and Mission activities to name a few.

The Presbyterian Preschool was established in 1966 and continues to serve families with young children with a Christian focused education.

Throughout the life of FPC, the church has been mission-minded reaching beyond the physical walls of the building by being involved in community activities and supporting other organizations in their outreach activities. We have tried to be sensitive to the needs of the community around us. Many groups have utilized our facilities for their activities; for example, Scouts, TOPS, 12 Step Groups, Karate, and Los Angeles Unified School District. Worship space has been provided to Korean and Spanish language congregations plus African Americans and Native Americans. Members of the congregation have ties with families in the mid-west and Great Lakes area of the country. A Multi-cultural church has emerged as families have been received; served ad joined this congregation to be servants as well. Today, families have come from Indonesia, Indian, Vietnam, Cambodia, Korea, Mongolia, Cameroon, Philippines and Nigeria.

Men who hauled the salvage lumber from a shipwreck to build a church would see their vision and dream has been carried on. They would see a worshipping community with bowed heads and hear voices murmuring, "Our Father, who art in heaven..." as we pray to God who never changes. God is Good.
